In this week’s edition, we first have an article by ABC. Recently in the news, there has been a lot of stories relating to the deportation or refusal of applicants with health issues. A Victorian family had their initial application for permanent residency denied, as their son had cystic fibrosis. Their son was considered to be a ‘burden’ on the Australian healthcare system. However, recently the family had their permanent residency granted.

Then there is the story by SBS about the struggles of a man who is living in Australia illegally. He originally came to Australia on a valid visa. However, he had overstayed his visa and now an ‘unlawful citizen’. Unfortunately, he has spent a few nights on the river bank.

‘Between 1 July 2018 and 31 May 2019, more than 132,000 citizenship by conferral applications have been approved, up from 70,000 in the same period last year. This represents an increase of 88 per cent,’ – David Coleman (SBS, 2019)
